Who we are
St Mary’s Eco Church was created by the Diocese of Southwark (Church of England) to respond to the climate emergency and biodiversity.
Our vision is to create innovative spaces for people to encounter each other, the rest of nature, and God, celebrating our differences and diversity.
The Revd Dr Sharon Moughtin
Vicar of St Mary's Eco Church, Lambeth
Sharon has been Vicar of St Mary’s Eco Church, Lambeth since its launch in November 2021. Her passion is for education within communities and she believes education has a strong role to play in responding to the climate crisis. Sharon is Visiting Research Fellow at King’s College London with a specialism in metaphor and Hebrew Bible/Old Testament.
What we do
Communities
Like different organisms form communities, we see St Mary's as a metaphorical wildflower meadow formed of small communities of distinct flowers and species, all connected beneath the soil. Whilst each group is an individual, we are trying to create that feel of an ecosystem with the groups providing for one another, such as our teen group preparing scavenger hunt activities for the younger children that come to our Sunday Eco Spotlight. Find out more on our Communities page.
Pop ups: drop-in natural art activities for all ages and abilities in public venues including Battersea Power Station for Christmas and Southwark Cathedral during the Gaia installation. We are an official partner of In a Field by a Bridge with Team London Bridge
Simple Eucharist
We see much of what we do as worship from spending time in nature and appreciating God's gift, to handing out salt dough for people to sculpt into small works of art. We also recognise the place of received patterns of worship and have a simple Eucharistic service, and regular evening services of prayer at All Hallows' Churchyard. Where we are
St Mary's Eco Church is a pop-up church based around the south bank of the River near Lambeth Palace. Frequently spotted in Archbishop's Park and All Hallows' Churchyard.
